Day 1: Material List

Before you can start building your green-roofed home, you need to gather the materials. For this project, you’ll need: straw bales, wooden boards, chicken wire, soil, and plants. Once you have all of your materials, you’re ready to start building! Place a row of straw bales in the shape of an ‘L’ so that they overlap on one side. Place wooden boards over the top and nail them into place with a nail gun or hammer and wood screws.

Next, staple chicken wire to hold it in place against the side that’s overlapping so that there are no gaps for water to leak through. Add another row of straw bales perpendicular to the first, then attach chicken wire as before until both sides are complete. Fill in any cracks between the two rows with more straw bales. Cover the top and front of your new green roofing material with soil so that when watered, it won’t leak out from underneath. Finally, add plants (either live or artificial) on top of the roof to give life to your new living space!

Day 2: Site Preparation

Today was all about preparing the site for our green-roofed home. We had to clear away any vegetation and level the ground. Then we dug a trench around the perimeter of the site. Next, we installed a drainage system in the trench and covered it with gravel. Finally, we brought in some topsoil and spread it around. We’re almost ready to start building!

Day 3: Lay The Foundation And Add The Walls

On the third day, you’ll lay the foundation and add the walls. To do this, you’ll need to first dig a hole for the foundation. Once the hole is dug, you’ll need to add some gravel and sand to the bottom. Next, you’ll need to add your walls. Start by adding the bottom row of logs. Make sure that they are level with each other. Once the bottom row is in place, you can start adding the rest of the logs for the walls.

Day 4: Add The Roof, Windows And Doors

You’ve made it to the final day! Today, you’ll add the roof, windows and doors. Start by measuring and cutting the lumber for the frame of the roof. Then, lay down a layer of tar paper and shingle the roof. Finish by adding the windows and doors. Voila! You’ve now built a green-roofed home in just three days.

Day 5: Install Plumbing, Electrical And Insulation

Now that the framework of your house is complete, it’s time to install the plumbing, electrical and insulation. This can be a daunting task, but with careful planning and a little help from professionals, you can get it done in just three days.
